Pasir Ris Seashore Trip

On May 28 2009, we embarked on our learning journey to Pasir Ris Seashore, which was postponed last time due to unfavourabe climatic conditions. Now that the exams are over, learning still persues. In the morning we set off for our destination in high spirits. The bus journey was quite a long one nevertheless, we arrived at our destination after what seemed like eternity. We were at Pasir Ris Park. We alighted and set foot on our interesting and fun adventure.

The Pasir Ris Park is a great place for nature entusiasts.Isolated form the hustle and bustle of the city,it is an ideal place for those who want to seek peace. It's a place to relax your senses and admire mother nature. Pasir Ris Park is filled with abundant tall, big trees and many other plants. It is also a home to numerous unique species such as mangrove creatures. Besides being a place for people to do their exercise, it is also a place for pupils to carry out fieldwork and research on the natural environment and enables hands-on learning. Thus the Pasir Ris Park is a awesome pace for both the young and old and people from all walks of life.

My classmates and I headed for the Pasir Ris Seashore and a shocking, terrifying sight awaited us. The seashore was so dirty and clogged with old bottles, straws(many), packets of snacks, plastic bags and many other rubbish. It was indeed a great shock that Singapore, famously known as a clean and green city by many tourists, has dirty, polluted seashores. These rubbish thrown into the sea by inconsiderate and irresponsible Singaporeans pose a serious threat to the marine community. Marine creatures such as turtles are greatly harmed by the infinite number of plastic bags shoved into the sea. Turtles, birds may feed on them and may die. This also affects the food chain as the destruction of one creature leads to the depletion of another, causing a huge decline in fish, a main source of protein for we people. As a result, we are also indirectly affected by our irresponsible actions. So, to play our part to preserve Singapore's one of the few remaining nature spots, we collected rubbish from the shore and disposed them in plastic bags. The shore was filled with several kinds of interesting stuffs such as toothbrushes and tyres. The plastic was completely filled and it was very heavy. It was a harduous, back-breaking task carrying the bag to the nearest dustbin. However the task was done and we heaved a sigh of relief.

On our learning journey we alos studied several mangrove creatures such as the sea anemone, horseshoe crab and water plants. These water plants help increase oxygen content in the water by carrying out photosynthesis. The muddy patch is formed by the gradual flow of tides. The mud provides the mangrove creatures with a favourable environment for the survival of these cratures. We also saw some creatures such as sea snakes and tapeworms. It was indeed a great experience learning about the castal environment. It has given me understanding of the relationship between people and the environment and why and how we can conserve the scarce natural resources in Singapore.
